Championship Show 2021

The North of England Bearded Collie Club

Championship Show 26 August 2021

Best In Show - Sandra Taylor (Judge)

As I was a founder member of ‘Nebcol’ I was delighted to be invited to judge Best in Show at their 30th Anniversary Championship Show.

Sadly the event was delayed a year due to the pandemic, therefore the Committee made the brave decision to incorporate the show into this year’s Pastoral Day at Driffield Championship Show, something which, I’m sure, judging by the friendly atmosphere, many exhibitors appreciated.

Judging took place as soon as was practical and thanks to the hard work of Lesley Tomlinson and her committee the event ran smoothly and everyone managed to get away at a reasonable time. Congratulations to all concerned.

I awarded Best in Show to Lewis and Moreland’s Potterdale Precious Rose with Garrity & Tibbett’s Potterdale Andante being Reserve Best in Show and Best Opposite Sex. Best Puppy was Harcourt- Brown’s Farmarens Imperial Highness at Orora (Imp Swe) and Best Veteran was Pedder’s Ch. Caldermist Kiss in the Dark.

 Dogs - Alan Hosie (Judge)

First my thanks go to the NEBCOL Committee for their invitation to judge dogs and award tickets for the first time at their Championship Show.

On the day they gave me a warm welcome and made sure I was well looked after. Also, a huge thanks to my two stewards who provided excellent assistance to me throughout such a cold day.

Unfortunately, we were not blessed with good conditions for showing Beardies. There was an extremely cold blustery wind blowing all afternoon, the ring was a bit rutted and there appeared to be morsels of food left in the grass. These conditions made it extremely difficult for handlers and dogs to show at their best. This was particularly the case in the early classes. I feel sure that with more benign conditions and no food lying around many of the dogs would have performed better and many of the placings could be changed. So many thanks to exhibitors for turning out on the day.

Almost wholly the dogs all had proper scissors bite, coats of correct texture, good depth and decent length of rib. But a number were too straight in the shoulder with some showing a lack of sufficient length in upper arm. Also, the hocks were too long in a number of cases. All of that said I was very pleased with the overall balance of exhibits on the day.

1. Mrs B and Mr K Handley - Bargemon Brigadoon at Barkenbear. BP
7 month dark slate who, in difficult conditions, was the most settled in the class. Good head, deep chest with proper shape, good lay back of shoulder, lovely expression coming from dark eye matching coat and sizing up nicely.

2. Mrs E Ayrton - Aoibh Drummer Boy
I liked this 6 month old boy on the stand his top line is excellent just not as settled as the class winner on the move. Good front set-up with balanced rear, eye matching coat, head of proper proportions, nice hocks and good length and depth of chest.

3. Mrs M Taylor – Megamaree Follow that Star

Super quality line up in this class.

1.Garrity and Tibbetts- Potterdale Andante DCC RBIS
Liked this dark slate boy as a youngster and it was a joy to see how he has developed. He is beautifully balanced but all male without exaggeration. Strong head of correct proportions, dark eye providing a melting expression, lovely shape of neck into well laid-back shoulders, good length to upper arm, good depth and correct shape of ribs. His overall balance allows him to move out with excellent extension and drive while maintaining his top-line through-out. Glad to award him the CC. DCC and RBIS

2.Bradida’s Brilliant Nutmeg Muffin at Calkylona (Imp)
Brown boy who moved out well in this tough class to secure a very close decision with 3. Of correct proportions he presents a lovely picture standing, has good head with eye matching coat, good depth of chest and length of rib and good fore-chest.

Another fine dog who didn’t move out as well as he can today. Really like his length to height ratio which comes from long rib with good depth of chest. Good lay back of shoulder, lovely masculine head with dark eye and soft expression. Would like to see more substance to him as I think he has the frame to hold it.

Bitches - Anne Wilding (Judge)

Firstly my thanks to the NEBCOL committee for inviting me to judge bitches at their club show. Also my stewards, Jane and Sue, for doing such a great job as always. We had a lovely big ring which enabled plenty of room for the girls to put their best foot forward. If a Beardie can’t move correctly with an easy stride they cannot do the job they were bred for. Overall I was impressed with the quality of the bitches before me although in some classes there was a marked difference in size and also type. With the quality being high I did penalise those who were overweight and others with dirty teeth.

 Minor Puppy Bitch.
1. Mrs B Harcourt-Brown - Farmarens Imperial Highness At Orora

Slate bitch who doesn't instantly stand out. On examination she is nicely made with true Beardie expression, pleasing head and expression, balanced angulation front and rear, good topline, correct turn of stifle. Moved with an easy stride. Should do well when mature.

Veteran Bitch

I love the veterans and it is obvious they enjoy their time in the ring.
